Sports Writers’ Verdict: Trabzonspor’s Defeat in Konya Raises Serious Questions
Trabzonspor suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Tümosan Konyaspor in the fifth week of the Trendyol Süper Lig. Despite entering the match with confidence after an impressive victory in the previous round, the Black Sea club struggled to impose its game and left the field empty-handed.
The decisive moment came very early. Konyaspor found the net in the second minute, forcing Trabzonspor to chase the match for almost the entire contest. Although the visitors enjoyed a significant share of possession and created several opportunities, they failed to turn their dominance into a goal.
Sports commentators focused particularly on Trabzonspor’s defensive weaknesses, the lack of intensity in midfield and the inability of the attacking players to find effective positions. The performances of several key names also came under scrutiny.
“Some players must understand the club’s objectives”
Reha Kapsal assessed the match as a major warning for Trabzonspor. According to him, the team arrived in Konya as the favorite after its strong performance and convincing result the previous week. However, conceding so early changed the entire character of the game.
Kapsal highlighted Trabzonspor’s difficulties when transitioning from attack to defense. The visitors repeatedly allowed Konyaspor to exploit open spaces and give the home side opportunities. He also criticized the apparent comfort of certain players on the pitch.
The commentator stressed that some members of the squad need to recognize both their responsibilities and the ambitions of the club more clearly. In his view, weaknesses within the team must be corrected before they become a bigger problem. He described the situation as “loose screws” that need to be tightened without delay.
“If necessary, even Salah must be substituted”
Cemal Ersen emphasized Konyaspor’s determination to protect its advantage. He compared the home team’s resistance, together with goalkeeper Bahadır’s performance, to a historic defensive stand.
Ersen pointed out that Trabzonspor produced six clear chances, but Konyaspor prevented any of them from becoming an equalizer. His strongest criticism was directed at the technical management of the team.
In his opinion, Trabzonspor urgently needs a coach capable of making difficult decisions, including taking a star player such as Salah off the field when his performance is poor. Ersen was particularly surprised that Çimşir removed Aral, one of the team’s most productive players, in order to keep Salah on the pitch.
The argument reflects a broader concern: reputation cannot be allowed to outweigh current form. A squad competing for high positions needs every player to be judged according to performance, not status.
“Konyaspor could have decided the match before halftime”
Zeki Uzundurukan described Trabzonspor’s display as one of its weakest of the season. He stated that the defensive line looked vulnerable while the midfield lacked strength and aggression.
Ozan Tufan and Fabinho, according to Uzundurukan, failed to provide sufficient support either in possession or without the ball. The attacking quartet of Onuachu, Muçi, Aral and Salah was unable to escape Konyaspor’s compact defensive structure.
Trabzonspor goalkeeper Onana prevented the score from becoming more damaging. His three important saves kept the visitors in the game, while Konyaspor could easily have extended its lead during the opening half. Trabzonspor, meanwhile, did not register a shot on target in that period.
Uzundurukan also criticized the unclear positioning of Salah and Muçi. Their roles often overlapped, which reduced the effectiveness of the attack and made it easier for Konyaspor to defend. Although Trabzonspor had 71 percent possession, it created only one genuine scoring opportunity through Salah.
The team’s lack of pressing was another major issue. Trabzonspor failed to compete strongly in physical duels, while large gaps appeared between its defensive, midfield and attacking lines.
“The defeat became inevitable”
Mustafa Çulcu focused on Trabzonspor’s defensive organization. He noted that the visitors were caught with too few players behind the ball when Konyaspor scored early. As a result, Trabzonspor effectively began the match one goal down.
Konyaspor disrupted the opponent’s passing rhythm through coordinated defending and disciplined midfield pressure. The home team also prevented Salah from receiving the ball in dangerous areas. Whenever Konyaspor won possession, it attempted to move forward quickly, creating further difficulties for Trabzonspor.
Onana’s saves temporarily kept the score within reach, but Trabzonspor could not find the equalizer. Çulcu concluded that once the visitors failed to capitalize on their opportunities, defeat became increasingly unavoidable.
Possession alone was not enough
The match once again demonstrated that controlling the ball does not automatically mean controlling the game. Trabzonspor had more possession, yet Konyaspor looked more dangerous during important phases.
The home side defended in a narrow formation, closed passing lanes and forced Trabzonspor to circulate the ball in harmless areas. The visitors struggled to accelerate their attacks or create numerical superiority around the penalty box.
For a team with title ambitions, possession must be accompanied by movement, pressing and clear positional discipline. Trabzonspor lacked all three elements for long periods in Konya.
Midfield balance remains a concern
The performance of the central midfield was one of the clearest problems. Trabzonspor failed to protect the defense adequately and did not move the ball forward quickly enough.
When midfielders do not offer passing options, the attacking players become isolated. This was evident throughout the match, as Onuachu frequently found himself surrounded by defenders and the wide attackers received the ball too far from goal.
The coaching staff will need to decide whether the current midfield pairing provides enough physical power, creativity and defensive protection. Otherwise, similar problems may appear against teams that press aggressively and transition quickly.
Attacking roles must be clarified
Another issue was the lack of clarity in the final third. Salah and Muçi often appeared uncertain about their exact zones, while Aral’s removal further reduced the team’s attacking rhythm.
A forward line can only function efficiently when players know when to stay wide, when to move inside and when to attack the space behind the defense. Trabzonspor’s movements were frequently predictable, allowing Konyaspor to remain compact.
The solution may involve clearer tactical instructions, better coordination between the wingers and striker, and more support from midfield runners.
The goalkeeper prevented a heavier defeat
Although Trabzonspor lost, Onana’s performance was one of the few positive aspects for the visiting side. His timely interventions kept the team within one goal and prevented Konyaspor from taking a decisive lead before halftime.
Without those saves, the match could have been settled much earlier. However, relying heavily on the goalkeeper is not a sustainable strategy for a team targeting the top of the league.
Trabzonspor must improve its defensive structure in front of him and reduce the number of clear chances conceded.
A warning before the season gains momentum
The defeat in Konya should be viewed as more than a single poor result. It exposed problems in defensive transitions, midfield competitiveness, attacking organization and squad management.
The team has enough quality to recover, but only if the coaching staff reacts decisively. Player selection must be based on form, tactical discipline and contribution to the team rather than reputation.
Trabzonspor’s next matches will show whether the Konya defeat was an isolated setback or an indication of deeper structural problems. What is clear is that possession, individual talent and previous results will not be enough unless the team plays with greater intensity, discipline and collective responsibility.
