Pickup truck crashes into TIR in Edirne: 2 dead, 1 injured

A deadly traffic accident on the Keşan-Malkara highway in Edirne claimed two lives and left one person injured late at night. The crash occurred around 23:00 on the 6th kilometre of the road, when a closed‑box pickup truck collided with a TIR travelling in the same direction.

According to initial information, the pickup was driving from Keşan towards Malkara. For reasons that have not yet been clarified, the driver – whose identity has not been determined – failed to avoid the heavy goods vehicle driven by 50‑year‑old Ö.K. and struck the rear of the TIR.

Inside the pickup truck were three people: two Pakistani nationals, Masawood Ur Rehman (25) and Muhammad Taimoor (31), as well as a 17‑year‑old Turkish citizen identified by the initials T.Y. All three occupants were injured in the impact.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene following calls to the authorities. Police, gendarmerie, fire brigade and medical teams arrived quickly and began rescue efforts. Due to the position of the damaged pickup, which had come to a halt on the side of the road near a slope, firefighters secured the vehicle with a rope, attaching it to the fire truck to prevent it from rolling into the ditch.

Medical teams provided first aid at the scene before transferring the injured to nearby hospitals. Despite all interventions, Pakistani nationals Masawood Ur Rehman and Muhammad Taimoor could not be saved and were pronounced dead. The 17‑year‑old Turkish teenager T.Y. survived the crash but sustained injuries and was taken under medical treatment.

The TIR driver, Ö.K., emerged from the collision without physical injuries. He was taken to the gendarmerie station to give a formal statement as part of the official investigation. Authorities have opened a file on the accident and are examining all circumstances surrounding the crash, including possible driver error, speed, road conditions and visibility at the time of the incident.

While technical teams examined the vehicles and collected evidence from the scene, traffic on the Keşan-Malkara highway was temporarily controlled and in part reduced to a single lane. After the wrecked pickup was recovered and the road was cleared of debris, normal traffic flow was gradually restored.

The accident once again drew attention to the risks on intercity highways, especially on routes frequently used by heavy goods vehicles. Late‑night driving, fatigue, insufficient distance between vehicles and high speeds are among the main factors often cited by experts in similar collisions involving trucks and smaller vehicles.

In such rear‑end collisions, the size and mass difference between a TIR and a pickup truck or car dramatically increases the severity of the outcome for the occupants of the smaller vehicle. Road safety specialists regularly stress the importance of maintaining a safe following distance, adjusting speed to night‑time conditions and ensuring that both truck and light vehicle drivers remain fully alert during long journeys.

Investigators are expected to review possible technical faults in both vehicles, examine tachograph records from the TIR, and check whether the pickup truck’s lights and brakes were functioning correctly. Toxicology tests may also be performed to determine whether any of the drivers were under the influence of alcohol or other substances, although there is no confirmed information on this yet.

The deaths of the two young Pakistani nationals also highlight the vulnerability of foreign workers or travellers who frequently move between cities in shared or commercial vehicles. Authorities are likely to contact their families and consular representatives to handle the repatriation of the bodies and complete the necessary legal procedures.

Local residents and regular users of the Keşan-Malkara road have long called attention to the need for better lighting, clearer signage and more frequent patrols on certain stretches, particularly at night and in bad weather. While the exact cause of this specific crash remains under investigation, the incident may renew discussions about additional safety measures, such as speed cameras, rumble strips, and more visible lane markings.

In the aftermath of such accidents, psychological support for survivors and witnesses can be as important as medical treatment. Young victims like 17‑year‑old T.Y. may face a difficult recovery, not only physically but also emotionally, after surviving a crash that claimed the lives of people travelling with them.

Authorities continue their work to determine responsibility for the accident and to clarify whether any criminal negligence was involved. The investigation’s conclusions will shape any legal proceedings against those found to be at fault and may also inform future decisions on improving road safety on this busy route.
