Car overturns in forested area in Tekirdağ: 1 dead, 3 injured

An evening drive in Tekirdağ’s Çerkezköy district turned into a fatal accident when a car veered off the road and rolled into a wooded area, leaving one person dead and three others injured. The tragic crash took place in the Kuşbahçe locality, where a vehicle driven by Hakan Kaplan lost control and overturned after striking trees in a forested zone by the roadside.

According to initial findings, Kaplan was behind the wheel when he suddenly lost command of the steering. The car left the roadway, slammed into trees among the dense vegetation and then flipped over. The impact was so strong that the vehicle was left badly damaged and some passengers were trapped inside.

Witnesses in the vicinity alerted emergency services immediately after hearing the sound of the crash and seeing the wreckage among the trees. In response to the calls, police, gendarmerie, fire brigade and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. Rescue efforts began at once, as teams worked both to secure the area and to reach those injured inside the vehicle.

Medical personnel carried out an on-site examination of the victims. Despite rapid intervention, it was determined that the driver, Hakan Kaplan, had died at the scene of the crash. His body remained stuck in the wreckage until rescue crews could safely extricate him from the deformed vehicle.

Three other occupants of the car – identified as Mehmet Serkan Kaya, Ethem Gül and Mustafa Kartal – were found injured. After receiving first aid at the crash site, they were transferred by ambulance to nearby hospitals for further treatment. Their exact conditions were not immediately disclosed, but they were reported to be under medical observation.

Following the examination by the public prosecutor, the body of driver Kaplan was removed from the crushed car by rescue teams. His remains were then taken to the morgue of Çerkezköy State Hospital for autopsy and official procedures. Security forces cordoned off the area while evidence was collected and the vehicle was removed from the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The inquiry will focus on potential causes such as excessive speed, road conditions, possible mechanical failure of the vehicle or driver error. Statements from witnesses and survivors, as well as technical analysis of the car, are expected to shed light on how the accident unfolded.

This fatal crash once again highlights the risks of losing control on roads bordered by forested or rural areas. On such stretches, there is often little protection between the vehicle and natural obstacles like trees, ditches or uneven ground. When cars leave the asphalt at high speed, collisions with solid objects can have devastating consequences, increasing the likelihood of rollovers and fatal injuries.

Experts frequently underline the importance of adjusting speed to match road and weather conditions, especially on curved or partially lit segments where visibility is limited. Even a brief distraction or minor steering error can cause a car to drift off course. When this happens on routes flanked by trees or steep embankments, drivers and passengers are at greater risk of serious trauma.

Emergency response also plays a crucial role in such incidents. In this case, the rapid arrival of medical and rescue teams helped ensure that the injured passengers received prompt treatment and transport. Firefighters and rescue personnel are trained to work in challenging environments like forests or uneven terrain, where access to vehicles is more difficult and the risk of secondary hazards is higher.

While technical examinations will determine the exact chain of events in the Tekirdağ crash, similar accidents often lead to broader discussions about road safety measures. These can include installing additional guardrails in sections adjacent to wooded areas, improving signage warning drivers of dangerous bends, and enhancing road lighting where feasible. Such infrastructural steps, combined with driver awareness, can reduce the severity and frequency of run-off-road collisions.

Beyond the accident in Tekirdağ, the day also brought another loss to the world of sports. During a match of the Amputee Football Super League held in Sakarya, DEPSAŞ Enerji Sports Club coach Mustafa Bebe suffered a heart attack on the sidelines. Despite being immediately taken to hospital and receiving medical intervention, he could not be saved and passed away.

The sudden death of coach Bebe underscores another dimension of public health and safety: the importance of rapid cardiac response and routine medical checks for individuals who work in high-stress or physically demanding environments, including sports. In many competitions, the presence of medical staff, defibrillators and emergency protocols can be decisive in saving lives when unexpected heart conditions arise.

The two separate tragedies – one on the road in Tekirdağ, the other on the pitch in Sakarya – serve as stark reminders of how abruptly life can change. They draw attention to different but equally critical issues: traffic safety and health emergencies. Both situations emphasize preparedness, whether it is better driving practices and safer road design, or well-established emergency medical procedures in sporting events.

For drivers, specialists recommend regular vehicle maintenance, paying particular attention to brakes, tires and steering systems that directly affect road handling. Fatigue management, avoidance of distractions such as mobile phones, and consistent use of seat belts for all occupants are also highlighted as simple yet vital steps to lower risks during travel.

On the sports and health front, organizations are increasingly encouraged to implement comprehensive risk assessments, offer periodic medical screenings to coaches and players, and ensure that staff are trained in basic life support. Quick recognition of heart attack symptoms, immediate first aid and fast hospital transport greatly improve survival chances in such incidents.

As investigations proceed in both Tekirdağ and Sakarya, families, colleagues and local communities are left mourning the victims. The hope is that the lessons drawn from these painful events will translate into stronger safety measures, greater awareness and, ultimately, fewer tragedies in the future.
