Poku’s Moment at Beşiktaş: Time to Make His Case

Vaclav Cerny’s injury has reopened the contest for Beşiktaş’s right-wing position, creating an opportunity for Ernest Poku to step into a more prominent role. The Czech winger has been diagnosed with a strain and swelling in the hamstring at the back of his left thigh. His absence could leave a gap not only in the starting lineup, but also in the way Beşiktaş build attacks from that side.

Cerny is expected to resume training with the squad in around two to three weeks, depending on how he responds to treatment. That estimate, however, does not mean he will immediately be ready to play. For a fast, explosive winger, the hamstring must regain its strength and flexibility before he can sprint and change direction without undue risk. Beşiktaş are therefore unlikely to rush him back before he is fully fit.

That caution could give Poku a valuable spell to prove what he can offer. Club president Serdal Adalı has previously pointed to the player’s potential, and Cerny’s injury arrives at a time when Poku has the chance to turn that promise into performances. The immediate challenge is to convince the coaching staff that he can contribute consistently, while also showing supporters why the club believes in him.

The two players bring different qualities to the right flank. Cerny is a creative, pass-oriented winger who can help dictate play, link up with teammates and deliver incisive balls into the penalty area. Beşiktaş may miss that composure and precision in settled possession while he is unavailable.

Poku, by contrast, is more of a direct, athletic attacker. He can drive towards the touchline, attack space behind the opposition defence or make forward runs into the box. His pace may be especially useful when Beşiktaş win possession and look to break quickly. In transition, a well-timed run from Poku could force defenders to retreat and create room for his teammates.

His possible inclusion would change the character of Beşiktaş’s right side. Rather than relying as heavily on combinations and carefully constructed moves, the team could place greater emphasis on speed, vertical runs and stretching the opposition across the pitch. That shift may suit some match situations more than others: against a side pressing high, Poku’s ability to attack open space could be a major asset.

There is reason to believe the winger can make an impact. Poku recorded 10 goal contributions in Germany’s second division last season, demonstrating that he can influence the scoreline as well as provide pace. A player who thrives in open areas may be particularly dangerous in the Süper Lig when opponents leave space behind their defensive line.

Still, filling in for Cerny will not be a simple like-for-like replacement. Poku’s strengths do not automatically reproduce the Czech player’s passing range or his role in organising attacks. Beşiktaş may need other players to take on more responsibility for progression and chance creation, while Poku focuses on stretching the defence and making purposeful runs.

His decision-making will be just as important as his acceleration. Knowing when to drive forward, when to hold the ball and when to combine with nearby teammates can determine whether a promising break becomes a genuine scoring opportunity. If defenders block the route down the line, Poku will need to find alternative ways to remain involved rather than relying on speed alone.

The coming matches could therefore serve as an important test of his adaptability. Strong performances would not only help Beşiktaş manage Cerny’s absence but also strengthen Poku’s claim for regular playing time after the Czech winger returns. The opportunity is there; making the most of it will depend on how effectively Poku turns his athletic qualities into end product.

For Beşiktaş, the priority is to protect Cerny’s recovery while keeping the right flank productive. For Poku, this is a chance to demonstrate that he can provide a different kind of threat-one built on acceleration, direct running and sharp movement around the penalty area. He now has an opening to show both the club and its supporters what he can bring.
