Beşiktaş improved under italiano despite controversial refereeing decisions

“There Seems to Be a Slight Allergy Toward Beşiktaş Among Referees”

Tivibu Spor commentator Erman Özgür assessed Beşiktaş’s performance during the opening weeks of the season and highlighted the team’s growing harmony under head coach Vincenzo Italiano. However, he also argued that the black-and-white side has repeatedly been forced to deal with questionable refereeing decisions.

Özgür believes Beşiktaş should not have to score several goals in every match simply to secure three points. According to him, the team has already become accustomed to fighting against refereeing controversies, despite the season being only five weeks old.

“They Have Become a Club Constantly Battling Refereeing Decisions”

Discussing Beşiktaş’s early-season matches, Özgür said the team must avoid being placed in a position where scoring three goals is necessary to win. He argued that no side can realistically produce such an attacking output in every game, especially when controversial decisions repeatedly affect the course of matches.

He also questioned several VAR interventions. Referring to the images shown during reviews, Özgür stated that he could not clearly see whether the ball had touched a player’s hand in one incident. For that reason, he wondered how the referee had been able to make such a definite decision. He also said he did not believe the foul awarded during the Cerny incident was convincing.

“The Standards Applied to Beşiktaş Are Very Low”

Özgür maintained that refereeing consistency has been particularly weak in Beşiktaş matches. He claimed that the decisions made against the club create the impression that there is “a slight allergy toward Beşiktaş” among referees.

Although the phrase was presented as a limited problem, the wider reaction among supporters suggested that many fans view the issue as far more serious. Some argued that the club has suffered from repeated errors over several seasons, rather than isolated mistakes in a handful of matches.

For Beşiktaş, such decisions can have consequences beyond a single result. A disallowed goal, a disputed penalty or an early foul can alter a team’s tactical plan, increase pressure on the players and make every subsequent match more difficult.

Beşiktaş Has Improved Its Overall Football

Despite his criticism of refereeing, Özgür praised Beşiktaş’s football. He said the team had produced one of the strongest performances among Turkey’s major clubs, with the exception of the away match against Alanyaspor.

In his view, the Alanyaspor game should be evaluated separately because Beşiktaş faced difficult conditions, including fatigue and high temperatures. Outside that encounter, he described the team’s football as understandable, organized and technically convincing.

The commentator also emphasized that Beşiktaş appears to have moved away from the fragile identity it displayed in previous seasons. The team seems more stable mentally, reacts better to setbacks and demonstrates greater confidence in its playing principles.

Italiano Has Quickly Built a Strong Connection

One of the most notable aspects of Beşiktaş’s current atmosphere is the relationship between Italiano, the players and the supporters. Özgür said he could not remember a recent Beşiktaş coach whose ideas had connected with both the squad and the fans so quickly.

He compared the present atmosphere with previous periods and suggested that a similar level of unity had not been seen since the tenure of Şenol Güneş. Although Sergen Yalçın led Beşiktaş to a championship, Özgür described that success as a unique story shaped by different circumstances.

Italiano’s influence has therefore been visible not only in tactical decisions but also in the emotional environment surrounding the club. The players appear more committed to the system, while supporters have regained belief in the team’s direction.

The Progress Cannot Be Attributed to One Person

Özgür also warned against explaining Beşiktaş’s improvement solely through Italiano. He stressed that the coaching staff as a whole and the players’ willingness to adapt have played an important role.

The current progress is based on several connected factors: a clearer tactical structure, improved communication, stronger team spirit and a better relationship with the stands. When these elements work together, a club can recover more quickly from difficult moments.

The unity created inside the squad may also help Beşiktaş maintain its level during the demanding part of the season. A team that trusts its coach and believes in its methods is less likely to collapse after one poor result or a controversial decision.

Supporters Expect Greater Consistency

Beşiktaş fans are not only demanding attractive football; they also want consistency from match to match. Strong performances in isolated fixtures will not be enough if the team loses concentration against lower-ranked opponents or struggles when the opposition defends deeply.

The club’s next objective should be to turn its improved game model into regular results. This requires better efficiency in front of goal, more disciplined defending and the ability to control matches without depending on late dramatic moments.

At the same time, the team must avoid allowing refereeing debates to dominate its season. While criticism of questionable decisions is understandable, Beşiktaş will need to remain focused on its own performance and reduce the impact of external distractions.

A New Sense of Togetherness

Özgür’s central argument is that Beşiktaş has finally achieved the togetherness it has lacked for several years. The connection between the coach, squad and supporters could become one of the team’s greatest strengths.

If this unity continues, Beşiktaş may remain a serious contender throughout the campaign. However, protecting that atmosphere will require patience, disciplined management and consistent performances on the pitch.

For now, the black-and-white club appears more organized, more confident and less vulnerable than in recent seasons. Whether this positive transformation can survive difficult fixtures and controversial decisions will be one of the most important questions of the year.
