Beşiktaş Set Sights on Augsburg’s Young Bundesliga Midfielder

Beşiktaş have reportedly added Augsburg midfielder Mert Kömür to their transfer shortlist as the club continues preparing for the upcoming winter transfer window. The Black-and-Whites are believed to be prioritizing younger players while also looking to strengthen the depth and quality of their midfield.

According to reports in the German media, Beşiktaş are among the clubs monitoring the 21-year-old footballer. Several European teams are said to be interested in Kömür, meaning the Turkish club could face strong competition if it decides to make an official offer.

Augsburg Demand €20 Million

Augsburg are reportedly seeking approximately €20 million for Mert Kömür. However, this figure may not be final. Negotiations could lead to a lower transfer fee, particularly if the buying club agrees to include performance-related bonuses or a percentage from a future sale.

Such a structure could make the deal more manageable for Beşiktaş. Instead of paying the entire amount upfront, the Istanbul club could attempt to spread the financial burden through installments, bonuses and a sell-on clause. This type of agreement has become increasingly common in transfers involving promising young players.

Augsburg’s willingness to negotiate may also depend on the level of interest from other clubs. If competition increases, the German side could maintain its initial valuation. Beşiktaş will therefore need to move carefully and determine whether Kömür fits both the team’s sporting plans and its financial limits.

A Product of the Augsburg Academy

Mert Kömür came through Augsburg’s youth system before progressing to the senior squad. His development within the club has made him one of the players attracting attention from outside Germany.

The midfielder is noted for his technical ability, composure in possession and willingness to contribute in the final third. He can operate in central midfield and has the qualities required to play in more advanced positions. His ability to connect midfield with attack is one of the main reasons he has become an attractive option for clubs looking for long-term potential.

During the current season, Kömür has appeared in four official matches and accumulated 108 minutes on the pitch. Although his playing time has been limited, his age and technical profile make him a player who could develop significantly with regular opportunities and a clearly defined role.

Why Beşiktaş May Be Interested

Beşiktaş have been trying to build a squad that combines experienced leaders with younger players who can improve and later generate transfer income. Kömür’s profile fits this approach. He is young enough to develop further, but he already has experience in the demanding environment of German football.

The club’s interest may also be linked to the need for greater midfield depth. A player capable of operating as an attacking midfielder or an advanced central midfielder could give the team more tactical flexibility. His technical qualities could be particularly useful against opponents who defend deep and force Beşiktaş to create chances through short passing combinations.

Kömür’s arrival, however, would not automatically solve every midfield problem. The team may still require a specialist defensive midfielder, a stronger box-to-box option or an additional wide attacker, depending on the coach’s tactical preferences and the players available in the squad.

Adaptation Would Be Crucial

A move from the Bundesliga to the Turkish Süper Lig would present both opportunities and challenges. Kömür would be joining a club with considerable expectations, intense media attention and supporters who demand immediate results. Adjusting to the atmosphere around Beşiktaş could be as important as adapting to the football itself.

The midfielder would also need time to become familiar with a new tactical system, different opponents and a more physically demanding schedule. If the club signs him as a long-term investment rather than an instant solution, a gradual integration process could be the most effective approach.

Regular training, careful workload management and a defined position would help him settle into the squad. Giving him consistent minutes in cup matches and selected league games could allow him to build confidence without placing excessive pressure on his shoulders.

A Transfer With Financial Risks

A reported €20 million valuation represents a significant investment for Beşiktaş. The club would need to assess whether the player’s expected development justifies such a fee. His limited number of senior appearances means that his potential remains more important than his established production at the highest level.

A performance-based agreement could reduce the initial risk. Beşiktaş might also seek an option involving a lower fixed fee and additional payments linked to appearances, goals, assists or team success. Such conditions would protect the club if the player requires a longer adaptation period.

At the same time, waiting too long could allow rival clubs to take the initiative. If Augsburg receives a strong offer from another European team, Beşiktaş may find it difficult to compete financially.

No Official Agreement Yet

At this stage, the reported interest does not mean that Beşiktaş have reached an agreement with Augsburg or the player. The club is understood to be monitoring Kömür, while a formal proposal would depend on the technical staff’s final assessment and the board’s financial strategy.

Beşiktaş are expected to continue evaluating several midfield targets before the transfer window opens. Kömür’s name is attracting attention because of his age, Bundesliga background and technical potential, but the final decision will depend on salary demands, transfer conditions and the club’s broader squad plan.

If Beşiktaş can negotiate a reasonable fee and offer the player a convincing development project, the German midfielder could become an important part of the team’s future. If the asking price remains close to €20 million without flexible payment terms, the club may decide to pursue more affordable alternatives.
