Former Marseille Coach Warns: “Beşiktaş Can Take Advantage of This”
Philippe Troussier, who coached Marseille during the 2004-05 season, assessed the French club’s situation ahead of the UEFA Europa League clash with Beşiktaş. According to the experienced coach, Marseille is still searching for the right balance after a major squad overhaul, and this uncertainty could create opportunities for the black-and-white side.
Beşiktaş, which was eliminated in the second qualifying round of the Europa League last season, entered the new campaign with renewed ambitions and a squad built to compete at a higher level. The Turkish team is determined to defeat Marseille in the match scheduled for Thursday, September 17, especially with the expected support of its home fans.
Troussier emphasized that Marseille’s recent results should be evaluated together with the club’s difficult rebuilding process. The French side lost two of its first three league matches, including a disappointing defeat at home. Such a start is particularly difficult to accept in Marseille, where supporters demand immediate success.
However, the former coach explained that the club’s management faced financial limitations while attempting to strengthen the squad. As a result, Marseille decided to reduce the size of its roster, retain the players considered most important and reshape the team around a more manageable structure. Troussier believes that such a transformation cannot be completed overnight.
Marseille Still Lacks Team Chemistry
The French coach does not regard motivation as Marseille’s primary weakness. In his view, there is a genuine desire within the club to build a competitive team and meet its targets. The main problem is that a new coach, new expectations and several new players have not yet formed a fully functioning unit.
“Building a balanced team takes time,” Troussier noted. Marseille is a club under enormous pressure, with supporters expecting more than ordinary victories. The team is also expected to reflect the identity, ambition and traditions of the institution. At present, there is a clear gap between those ambitions and the football being displayed on the pitch.
This lack of balance may become especially important against Beşiktaş. European matches often punish defensive mistakes, poor positioning and communication problems. If Marseille’s players continue to struggle with their roles, Beşiktaş could use quick transitions, pressure in midfield and attacks into open spaces to create decisive chances.
Troussier Backs Bruno Genesio
Despite Marseille’s unstable start, Troussier expressed confidence in head coach Bruno Genesio. He argued that Genesio proved his abilities during successful spells at Lyon and Lille. The coach has experience creating a positive atmosphere, establishing a clear football philosophy and developing a coherent tactical plan.
Troussier believes Genesio has the knowledge required to manage the intense pressure surrounding Marseille. He also expects the manager to communicate effectively with his players and gradually introduce his ideas. The biggest issue, however, will be whether Genesio is given enough time and suitable conditions to implement his project.
At Marseille, winning individual matches is not the only requirement. The manager must build a side that represents the club’s identity and satisfies a demanding fan base. Troussier therefore sees patience as a decisive factor in Genesio’s potential success.
Loss of Key Players Has Reduced Marseille’s Individual Quality
According to Troussier, Marseille’s biggest weakness is not necessarily its collective work under Genesio but the loss of several high-quality players. The club significantly reduced its squad and allowed footballers with the ability to change matches individually to leave.
That loss could have a major impact in European competition. International matches are often decided by moments of individual brilliance: a dribble, a creative pass, a long-range strike or a single action that breaks an organized defense. Marseille may now have fewer players capable of producing such moments consistently.
This is an area where Beşiktaş can gain an advantage. If the Turkish side maintains a compact defensive structure and prevents Marseille’s most dangerous attackers from receiving the ball in favorable positions, the French team may struggle to create clear opportunities.
Paixão and Harit Remain Major Threats
Troussier identified Igor Paixão and Amine Harit as two players who can still make a difference for Marseille. Paixão remained at the club despite interest from other teams and is considered one of Marseille’s most influential attacking options.
The Brazilian possesses the pace, technique and directness to affect a game almost by himself. He can attack from wide areas, move inside and exploit defensive gaps. Beşiktaş defenders will need to avoid giving him space, particularly during transitions.
Amine Harit is another important figure. After returning from a serious injury, the midfielder has worked his way back toward his previous level. His technical quality, creativity and ability to open up passing lanes make him a dangerous player between the lines.
Harit’s movement could be particularly problematic if Beşiktaş allows him to receive the ball close to the penalty area. Preventing him from turning and facing the defense should be one of the Turkish team’s main tactical priorities.
Where Beşiktaş Can Find an Advantage
Troussier’s comments point to several possible weaknesses Beşiktaş can target. Marseille’s defensive coordination may not yet be fully established, especially when the team loses possession. Beşiktaş can therefore attempt to press immediately after losing the ball and force Marseille into hurried decisions.
The home team should also focus on switching play quickly. If Marseille’s full-backs move forward, open spaces may appear behind them. Fast diagonal passes and well-timed runs from Beşiktaş’s wingers could expose those areas.
Set pieces may offer another opportunity. Teams still adapting to one another can experience problems with marking assignments during corners and free kicks. Beşiktaş’s physical strength and aerial presence could become valuable in these situations.
At the same time, Beşiktaş must avoid becoming overly aggressive. Marseille still has enough attacking quality to punish defensive errors, particularly through Paixão’s speed and Harit’s creativity. A controlled and disciplined approach will be essential.
A Match That Could Be Decided by Patience
The encounter may develop into a contest between Beşiktaş’s cohesion and Marseille’s individual talent. The Turkish side is expected to rely on collective movement, crowd support and high intensity, while Marseille may look for moments of brilliance from its most gifted players.
If Beşiktaş can maintain its concentration, limit Marseille’s dangerous attackers and exploit the French side’s unfinished team chemistry, it has a realistic chance of taking control of the match. Marseille, meanwhile, will need to show that its rebuilding process has already produced enough stability to withstand the pressure of a demanding European night.
Troussier’s warning does not suggest that Marseille lacks quality altogether. Instead, it highlights a team still searching for its final shape. For Beşiktaş, that uncertainty could be the most important opportunity of the match.
