19-Year-Old Dies After Fall from Sixth-Floor Terrace; Friend Arrested
A 19-year-old man has died after falling from the terrace of a sixth-floor building in Bucak, in Türkiye’s Burdur province. One of the four friends who were with him at the time has been jailed on suspicion of causing death through negligence.
The incident took place late on Sunday in Oğuzhan neighbourhood, on Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Street. Muhammet Çağrı Çiçen fell from the terrace for reasons that have not yet been established.
Emergency medical and police teams were sent to the scene after the fall was reported. Paramedics treated Çiçen at the location before taking him by ambulance to Bucak State Hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts, he died from his injuries.
Four friends who had been with Çiçen when he fell were initially detained for questioning. They were released after giving statements at the police station.
Investigators later obtained additional evidence and detained all four again. After questioning, the suspects were brought before a court. M.Z.İ. was remanded in custody on suspicion of causing death through negligence, while the other three were released under judicial supervision and given a ban on travelling abroad.
The investigation is continuing. Authorities have not publicly established how Çiçen fell, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain under examination.
A detention or arrest during an investigation is not, by itself, a finding of guilt. The allegation against the jailed suspect will be assessed through the legal process, alongside the evidence gathered by investigators.
In cases involving a fatal fall, investigators may examine the scene, take statements from people present and review any available physical or digital evidence. Such steps can help clarify the sequence of events, although no conclusions about this case should be drawn before the inquiry is complete.
The conditions attached to the release of the other three suspects are a form of judicial oversight. A travel restriction, for example, can be imposed while a case is investigated without meaning that a person has been convicted.
The exact cause of Çiçen’s fall has not been disclosed. The authorities’ ongoing inquiry is expected to establish what happened at the terrace and whether anyone may bear legal responsibility.
The death has also drawn attention to the serious risks posed by falls from height. Terraces and balconies can be dangerous, particularly when access is not adequately secured. However, the available information does not establish whether any safety issue contributed to this incident.
As the investigation proceeds, any further developments will depend on the evidence reviewed by the authorities and the decisions made by the court. For now, the central questions-how the fall occurred and what role, if any, others played-remain unresolved.
