Beşiktaş Set Their Hoffenheim Game Plan
Beşiktaş have begun preparations for their UEFA Europa League second-round match against Hoffenheim, with head coach Vincenzo Italiano outlining how he wants his side to approach the trip to Germany. The Turkish club opened its European campaign with an emphatic 6-1 win and will now aim to maintain that momentum away from home.
Italiano believes Hoffenheim can be unsettled by pressure, pointing to weaknesses in the German side’s defence. His plan is to keep Beşiktaş’s play simple and use well-timed pressing to provoke mistakes rather than take unnecessary risks in possession.
“We know they have vulnerabilities at the back. We need to play simply and avoid forcing things. At certain moments, we’ll press and try to make them lose the ball. We’re going to Germany to come back with a win,” the coach said.
The Italian also warned his players not to underestimate Hoffenheim’s physical strength. The German team can make progress with long passes, so Beşiktaş will need to stay compact and avoid leaving space for their opponents to exploit.
“The 2-1 result against Kocaelispor did not satisfy anyone. Hoffenheim are a physically powerful team and can be dangerous with long balls. We must not let them control the game, and we cannot leave open spaces. As the match goes on, we can take calculated risks,” Italiano said.
That approach suggests Beşiktaş will prioritise defensive organisation before committing more players forward. Keeping the distances between the lines short could help limit Hoffenheim’s direct attacks, while also giving the visitors a better chance to press together instead of allowing the German side to play through them.
The timing of the press will be important. Beşiktaş will need to choose moments when Hoffenheim are trying to build from the back, rather than chase the ball continuously. A coordinated press could force hurried passes; poorly timed pressure, however, could leave gaps for the hosts to attack.
Vaclav Cerny is expected to miss the match after suffering an injury against Kocaelispor. Medical examinations found a strain and swelling in the back of his left thigh, and treatment has begun. The Czech player is also considered a doubt for Beşiktaş’s league match against Trabzonspor on Monday, 19 October.
The club’s medical staff are hoping Cerny will be fit for the game against Başakşehir on 26 October. His absence removes an attacking option from Italiano’s plans, making it especially important for the available players to make the most of their opportunities and maintain balance when moving forward.
The Hoffenheim fixture is scheduled for Thursday, 15 October, at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena, with kick-off set for 22:00 Turkish time. Belgian referee Lawrence Visser has been appointed to oversee the match.
For Beşiktaş, the challenge will be to combine the confidence earned from their opening European victory with the discipline required for an away game. A strong start could help the visitors impose their pressing plan, but patience may be just as important if Hoffenheim withstand the early pressure.
Avoiding turnovers in dangerous areas will also be central to the visitors’ strategy. Since Hoffenheim can attack quickly with long passes, Beşiktaş’s defenders will need to remain alert even when their team has possession. If the players keep their shape, limit space and press at the right moments, they will have a clearer route to competing for all three points.
