Passenger Ferry Strikes Derin Mermerci’s Historic Waterfront Mansion

A passenger ferry cruising along the Bosphorus struck the historic waterfront residence of Derin Mermerci in Istanbul’s Kandilli district late at night. The collision damaged the property’s landing and garden area, while a yacht moored in front of the mansion was also hit. Mermerci, who was at home with her children, later went to a police station to file a complaint.

The incident happened at around 11:30 p.m. The ferry was reportedly travelling on a Bosphorus tour when, for reasons that have not yet been established, it veered off course and moved towards the shore. It first collided with the yacht anchored in front of the approximately 200-year-old Kazasker Necmettin Efendi Yalısı, then struck the mansion’s waterfront landing and garden.

Security camera footage captured the collision. The impact caused substantial damage to the landing, according to Mermerci, who described the frightening moments and their aftermath in posts on social media. She said her children were deeply shaken by what happened.

“Thank God, a thousand times over. I suppose this is what they mean when they say, ‘May it be damage to property, not to people.’ We were lucky,” Mermerci wrote.

The fact that nobody was reported injured was a relief, but the collision left the family distressed and raised questions about how the ferry lost control so close to the shoreline. The circumstances surrounding the vessel’s movement had not been clarified in the information available at the time of the report.

Mermerci’s complaint followed the damage to the historic property and the frightening experience inside the house. A collision involving a large vessel can affect more than the visible sections of a waterfront building: force from an impact may also damage a landing, retaining structures or other parts of the shoreline. Any assessment of the mansion would therefore need to establish the full extent of the damage rather than focus only on what can be seen in footage.

The accident also brought renewed attention to comments Mermerci made in an interview several months earlier about life in a waterfront mansion. She had described it as difficult, saying that pipes frequently burst and household problems regularly arise. “Yalı life is frightening,” she said at the time, adding that the house had become something of a burden rather than the effortless luxury many people imagine.

She also pointed to one practical advantage of living on the Bosphorus: travelling by boat can provide a way to cross the city without getting caught in Istanbul traffic. The ferry collision, however, offered a stark reminder that proximity to the water can bring risks as well as convenience.

For residents of historic waterfront homes, an incident like this can be unsettling even when no one is hurt. Such properties sit directly beside a busy waterway, where passenger vessels, private boats and moored yachts may pass close to buildings and shore installations. The incident at Kandilli underscores the importance of keeping vessels under control and maintaining adequate clearance from the shoreline.

The cause of the ferry’s loss of control remains central to understanding how the crash occurred. A formal investigation would typically need to examine the vessel’s course, operating conditions and any technical or navigational issues. Until those details are established, it is not possible to say what led the ferry to drift towards the mansion.

The collision also highlights the value of documenting damage promptly. Security footage can help establish the sequence of events, while photographs and professional inspections can record the condition of the landing, garden and nearby yacht. Such documentation may assist authorities as they review the incident and determine what happened.

For Mermerci and her family, the immediate priority was their safety. Although the impact caused serious alarm and damage to the property, her statement expressed relief that the consequences were confined to material loss. The episode has nevertheless revived her earlier remarks about the challenges of maintaining a historic yalı-and shown how vulnerable waterfront homes can be when a vessel comes too close.
