71 Matches, 9 Goals: What Deniz’s Porto Record Reveals

Deniz Gül attracted considerable praise after Galatasaray secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Kocaelispor. His effort, movement and ability to contribute to the team’s attacking structure were highlighted as signs that he could become an important option in the squad.

However, his performance away to Trabzonspor told a different story. Deniz struggled to make an impact, remained largely on the margins of the game and was eventually substituted. The contrast between the two matches led to questions about whether the criticism was too harsh or whether the praise after the Kocaelispor fixture had been exaggerated.

Those familiar with the forward’s record at Porto, however, would not regard this inconsistency as a surprise. Deniz’s numbers in Portugal already suggested that he is a player capable of producing useful moments but not necessarily one who regularly decides matches with goals.

During his Porto spell, Deniz made 71 appearances and scored nine goals. On paper, that is a modest return for an attacking player. It does not mean that he lacks ability, but it does show that expectations surrounding his finishing and offensive influence must remain realistic.

A player whose contribution goes beyond goals

Deniz’s game cannot be evaluated solely through his goal tally. He can provide energy in the final third, occupy defenders, press from the front and create space for teammates. These qualities may not always appear in the statistics, yet they can still be valuable within a tactical system.

At the same time, a forward is ultimately judged by his efficiency near the penalty area. Deniz has not yet demonstrated the consistency required to turn regular opportunities into goals. His Porto record reflects this issue: he was involved in many matches, but his scoring output remained limited.

This explains why his performances can change so sharply from one fixture to another. When the match allows him to run into open space or benefit from quick transitions, he can appear dangerous. Against compact defenses, however, he may struggle to find room and can become disconnected from the attack.

Why the Kocaelispor match created high expectations

The victory over Kocaelispor offered Deniz a suitable environment to show his strengths. His movement was more visible, he participated in attacking transitions and appeared confident in duels. That performance naturally encouraged positive reactions from supporters and commentators.

Yet one good display cannot automatically be treated as proof that a player has solved all of his weaknesses. Deniz still needs to show that he can maintain the same level against stronger opponents, in difficult away matches and when his team controls less of the game.

The Trabzonspor encounter exposed precisely this problem. Once the space disappeared and the intensity increased, Deniz found it difficult to influence proceedings. His substitution was therefore not necessarily a sign that the coaching staff had lost faith in him; it may simply have been a tactical response to an ineffective performance.

Patience and clear expectations are essential

The biggest risk for Deniz is the rapid change in public perception. After one match, he may be described as a major attacking solution; after the next, doubts about his quality can emerge. Such extreme judgments do little to help a young player develop.

Galatasaray must decide how Deniz will be used and what role it expects him to perform. If he is viewed as a regular goalscorer, then his Porto statistics should raise legitimate concerns. If he is considered a supporting forward who contributes through pressing, movement and link-up play, his value should be assessed more broadly.

His development will also depend on the players around him. A forward who does not always create chances independently needs reliable service from midfield and effective movement from the wingers. When the team’s attacking structure breaks down, Deniz’s weaknesses become more visible.

What Deniz must improve

The most important area for Deniz is finishing. He must become more decisive when chances arrive and improve his shot selection inside the box. Even a small increase in conversion rate could significantly change the perception of his performances.

He also needs to strengthen his positioning against deep defensive lines. Rather than constantly moving toward the ball, he must learn when to remain between the center-backs and when to attack the space behind them.

Physical consistency is another factor. Maintaining intensity throughout a match would allow him to press more effectively and remain involved even when he is not receiving frequent passes.

His decision-making in the final third requires improvement as well. Choosing between a shot, a pass and a supporting run more quickly could make his attacking contributions far more productive.

Porto record should be a warning, not a verdict

The figure of nine goals in 71 matches should not be used as a definitive judgment on Deniz’s career. Players develop at different speeds, and a change of league, tactical role or team environment can influence their output considerably.

Nevertheless, the record is an important indicator. It suggests that Deniz should not yet be presented as a proven scorer or as the solution to Galatasaray’s goal-scoring problems. He needs time, regular opportunities and a clearly defined role.

Galatasaray supporters can expect commitment, movement and occasional strong performances from him. What remains uncertain is whether he can turn those qualities into reliable numbers.

For now, Deniz should be evaluated over a longer period rather than through isolated matches. The praise following the Kocaelispor victory was understandable, just as the criticism after the Trabzonspor game was inevitable. Both reactions, however, need to be considered alongside the broader picture.

His Porto history shows that Deniz is a player with useful tools but unfinished development. The next stage of his career will depend on whether he can convert potential into consistency-and whether Galatasaray can create the conditions for that progress.
